Phyllis McDowell's paintings reflect the rich variety of her work experience abroad and at home. After qualifying at Bromley College of Art and Brighton Art Teachers Training College, Phyllis moved to Ghana where she lectured in Fine Art at Kumasi University. She continued her painting and teaching career with appointments in Los Angeles and subsequently Zambia, participating in solo and mixed exhibitions.

Since establishing her base in Folkestone, Kent, England, Phyllis has taught in adult education, demonstrates regularly at local art societies, arranges painting workshops in her own studio and takes groups out on location both at home and abroad - India, Portugal, Spain and Ireland.

Her work has been shown at The Royal Academy Summer Show, The Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour - Mall Gallereis, The Society of Botanical Painters - Westminster Gallery and The Laing Collection. Her African Collection launched the Kent County Council Artsbus Touring Kent. She held her Restrospective Exhibition at The Grand, Folkestone.

Phyllis participated in group exhibitions at The Chimaera Gallery, Folkestone and The Peche Gallery, Sandgate. She has been invited to show a selection of her work in The Johnny Cotter Gallery, Folkestone. She accepts work on commission and welcomes visitors to her studio where there is a permanent display of painting.
